Kanha AI is a voice-first, screen-free companion designed for children aged 3–13. It explores how artificial intelligence can exist in childhood without relying on screens, supporting curiosity, emotional awareness, and parent-guided growth through conversation alone. The project combines physical product design, AI interaction design, and a parent-governed digital ecosystem.

CONTEXT

Children today grow up in environments dominated by screens. Most “smart” products for kids are visual, overstimulating, and engagement-driven. Meanwhile, parents are increasingly concerned about screen dependency, emotional regulation, and the lack of safe AI systems designed specifically for childhood. At the same time, AI is becoming embedded into everyday life. The question is no longer whether children will interact with AI.

Hare Krishna!

How might we reimagine AI for childhood without relying on screens, overstimulation, or loss of parental trust?

but, why?

CAUSE

Because children don’t need more screens. They need better conversations. Most child-facing technology optimizes for attention. Kanha optimizes for reflection. Most AI products prioritize speed and scale. Kanha prioritizes safety, emotional nuance, and parent governance.

The intent was not to create another device but to design a system that encourages:

  • Curiosity without distraction

  • Expression without exposure

  • Guidance without surveillance

  • Technology without overstimulation

The inspiration draws from timeless storytelling traditions — positioning AI not as entertainment, but as a thoughtful companion.

The space in between

CONTEXT

Parents in India are finding it challenging to select toys that truly promote their children's learning, emotional growth, and cultural connection without boosting screen time or introducing technologies like as AI experiences into the home. While many smart toys emphasise technology, they frequently lack warmth, cultural significance, and the sense of trust that parents seek.

In many households where both parents are working, children often spend long hours on their own. During these moments, toys and screens become silent companions, shaping how children learn, feel, and pass time. While technology fills this gap, it often does so in ways that feel overstimulating and impersonal.

At the same time, traditional toys that parents trust for their warmth, safety, and cultural familiarity struggle to remain relevant in a world shaped by interaction and responsiveness. This creates a tension between comfort and capability between toys  that  feel  safe  and technologies that feel intelligent.

Who

WHO IS IT FOR?

Primary User - Children (3–12 years)

Curious, imaginative, and emotionally expressive, often experiencing moments of quiet play or loneliness, especially in households where parents are not always present.

Secondary User - Parents

Caring and cautious, concerned about screen addiction, AI exposure, and the loss of meaningful play. They value safety, cultural familiarity, and transparency in the toys they bring into their homes.

Why

WHY ARE WE MAKING THIS TOY

The project aims to support children’s emotional growth, curiosity, and imagination without increasing screen dependence or overstimulation. It seeks to preserve the warmth and innocence of play while allowing parents to feel confident, informed, and in control.

  • Initiates interactions

  • Adapts interaction based on the child’s age

  • Supports emotional expression and reassurance

  • Tells stories and cultural narratives

  • Encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and kindness

  • Emotional check-ins and daily habit reminders

RESEARCH INSIGHTS

Trust Matters More Than Novelty
Parents are skeptical of AI in intimate spaces like bedrooms.
2. Children Seek Presence, Not Stimulation
They return to objects that feel emotionally safe.
3. Screens Fill Time — Not Emotional Gaps
Occupation ≠ companionship.
4. Cultural Familiarity Reduces Resistance
Parents are more open to innovation when it feels rooted.

Interaction Philosophy

PRINCILPLES

Voice-First
No screens. No flashing lights. No dopamine loops.
Silence as Design
Kanha does not demand attention. Presence > Performance.
Proactive, But Gentle
Instead of “commands”, it says:

  • “Shall we start homework together?”

  • “You sounded quiet earlier.”

  • “Would you like a story?”

Small nudges. No pressure.
