How the information about SEX-ED is conveyed, should be straightforward and factual.

Theme: Flow of Information

Insight 1: It would be direct, clear, crisp, and precise, however, it might be dominated by awkwardness.

Insight 2: What one wants to say is not the same as what one understands.

Insight 3: May become factual and Technical.

Should we use indirect themes (like storytelling) to communicate information, at least in the beginning phase ?

Theme: Medium

Insight 1: Could be a great way of communicating complex processes in simple words ( just like we explain children`about love, honesty, trust etc.).

Insight 2: Negatively, it might create even more confusion.

Insight 3: The person who is giving the information , should himself/ herself be well educated on the same.

Should we leave it to the teenagers to decide how they want the information to be conveyed to them?

Theme: Comfort Zone

Insight 1: Yes, because individually they will be able to absorb facts at their own pace.

Insight 2: No, because we are not sure about the sources they would choose. It might receive misleading inputs.

Insight 3: Teenagers - not all are aware of the sources from where they can seek help. The barrier of hesitation further curbs education about sex.

LEARNINGS

Instead of tackling a specific difficulty, the three components were combined and considered to retain the teaching method as a blend of narrative and factual knowledge. Another factor that would direct our ultimate conception of the product would be the use of questions and answers to dispel uncertainties.

ABOUT THE APP

‘Nooky’ is an interactive and educational app that can help teenagers which allows multiple users to Connect, Discover, Share, Learn and converse about the issues bothering them. It Re-establishes the link between the existing tools. The target stakeholder for this new app is “teenagers”, with the focus remaining on “FLOW OF CORRECT INFORMATION” and “DOUBT SOLVING’.

Why Sex education?

CAUSE

While brainstorming about problems we face in our daily lives, it became evident that 'Sex Education' is a topic that is often misconstrued in the eyes of many people. While debating it with my peers, I headed to the realisation that none of us is exempt from the issues we had as kids, and everyone had a list of tales they couldn't stop talking about.

Alexa! Let's talk about Sex!

INITIAL HMW - How Might we break the stigma around sex education by designing the tools to facilitate the conversation between Adult and children by making it more comfortable.

The three identified stakeholders were ‘Teenagers, Parents, and Teachers’. Discussing the challenges, and empathizing became one such problem. Understanding each of their perspectives was equally important to address the issue which became difficult since they weren't ready or at ease discussing sex.  None of the stakeholders (Parents and children) were able to initiate a conversation about sex - education. ‘Ignorance, unawareness, discomfort, hesitation’ etc, are keywords that best describe their situation.

Awkward & Shamefull?

Icon

WHAT DO THEY NEED TO DO?

What needed to be done Differently?

Firstly disassociate the term “sex” from “shame” and not consider it a taboo to talk about, Start with an early explanation, Create cordial conditions to share and receive information, have a continuous conversation, Find an appropriate medium of instruction, and Not trust the rumors and misleading information from unreliable sources.

How will we know that they were Successful?

When the taboo around the topic is removed it is considered a natural process, not a topic of shame. When in doubt, the child turns up to the parents/siblings or teachers.

WHAT DO THEY SEE?

What are they watching or Reading?

Most often, both boys and females watch porn. Due to availability, there has been a recent move towards more educational and instructive broadcasts. Rape cases are often reported in newspapers and on television. The offender may be the same person who did not undergo sex education to learn how to control their urges.

What do they see in the Immediate environment?

From the Parent’s end – willingness to share is dominated by awkwardness. Premature indulgence and Giggles, laughter, and joking about the sex.

WHAT DO THEY SAY?

What have we heard them saying?

Parents - Wait for the right age, Children will discover everything on their own. This is a generation of smarter and technologically savvy kids. They know how to make use of the technology and discover things on their own thus, we do not want to invade their privacy. We don’t want to discuss it openly. might spoil the parent-children relationship, Want openness and frankness, but not way too much.

Teachers - Most of the teachers try to avoid such matters, or they simply restrict the curriculum to NCERT with no explanation beyond. Lack of training given to teachers to talk about it. The fear of what to say and what not to say, what will be interpreted by child, what will their parents think.

WHAT DO THEY HEAR?

What are they hearing others say?

Parents - Though we have the willingness and acceptance for the term “sex education “ and want to talk about it, somewhere or the other we lack the tools to facilitate the conversation.

Teachers - Even if we want to remove the barrier and break the silence, the environment around us is such that they start judging and it gets trickled into our character.  Risks professional life and is considered an act of deviation from society.

Children - Till a certain age they are curious and ask questions but due to the responses they get, they get awkward around the subject and thus move to cracking jokes and avoiding the subject.

WHAT DO THEY DO TODAY?

We see two distinct takes. Young parents attempt to give kids a little exposure. Use storytelling to convey knowledge about sex and physical changes. Gaining comfort and establishing a connection. Mid-Aged Parents struggle with their own biases. tries to stray from the subject.  Teachers sometimes try to rush through the chapters and lean more towards using technical language.  Kids frequently turn to the internet for advice and believe the stories they hear. They frequently develop false beliefs in their minds. conceal their genuine emotions out of fear of "what the people might say," even though they secretly desire to learn about and experience it.  Contrasting actions are seen on one side with candor, openness, and a desire to communicate. Otherwise, do not address, ignore, or change the topic.

LAUNCH SCREEN &N ON BOARDING

Nooky

Why do we have different logins?

There are different logins so that we can segregate the users and put them into different categories.

What is the need to segregate the users?

Since the user base is very large and includes children, we need to ensure that we deliver only age-appropriate content. This would help us solve another major challenge that we started with i.e. “right information at the right age” (a key concern of parents that we identified in the interview phase).

How is the content different for different user categories when the platform is the same?

The answer is simple. The display of content on the screen of the users remains in our hands, since in the beginning only we have data about the age of the users, we know what to show them and what not.

Let us understand this with an example:

Age group 10 - 13 :  Content : Where do babies come from?  (Introduction to the concept).  Age group 18 +:  Content: The importance of having safe sex.  (HOW to do it?)

Age group 14 - 17: Content: What is sex? The process of reproduction is explained. (WHAT is it all about?; WHY is it done?) Parents : Content: Why is it necessary to tell your child about sex ? (The necessity).

A PLACE FOR INTERACTING AND SHARING The feature of messaging which we have labelled “Direct” allows the app user to talk and share audio- visuals pertaining to the matter with their friends, peers, parents and children. The app supports individual chats as well as group chats.

ARTICLES (READ) It is for a deeper understanding and explanation, there are written articles supplementing the corresponding videos. VISUALS: A very effective way of communicating and explaining concepts to people is through the use of videos.

A PLATFORM TO SHARE THOUGHT, OPINIONS AND EXPERIENCES (TALK) The app users are encouraged to share openly about their experiences, opinion and thoughts about sex education with complete anonymity, the identity of the person is kept confidential.

CONTENTS AVAILABLE

Let’s Dig up?

Amaze - is a sex education video series for children ages 10 to 14. It hopes to bring a more modern, kid-friendly face to lessons that can be, best-case scenario, awkward and uncomfortable. Launched last September, amaze covers traditional topics like puberty and masturbation, along with more progressive topics. For example, the video Porn: Fact or Fiction.

Comic Strips - Girls love to read stories in the book and learn about menstruation on their own. Although this book is specifically for girls aged 9 to 14 years, younger or older girls and even boys would find it an interesting and informative read.

Phone Application ‘CRUSH’ - Crush covers the emotional aspects of Sex, Healthy Relationships, How birth control works, and How pregnancy happens. It also offers a clinic finder and helps users choose which birth control is best for them.

It Matters - Aimed at 14 to 24-year-olds, this app contains a Common Questions and Answers” section on sexual Health Topics, Healthy Relationships, Birth Control options, and what to expect in terms of cost and insurance coverage when visiting a doctor or clinic. Other sections cover sexually transmitted diseases and LGBTQ health.

Attention of Users

Keeping intact both positive and negative features, we thought of Re-establishing the link between the existing tools and thereby designing an interactive and educational app that can help teenagers (10 - 21 years) to learn, discover, share and at the same point converse about the issues bothering them. The target stakeholder for this new app is “Teenagers”, with the focus remaining on “FLOW OF CORRECT INFORMATION” and “DOUBT SOLVING”.

WHAT ARE WE PROTOTYPING?

An educational app that is interactive and allows multiple users to Connect, Discover, Share and Learn.

WHO ARE THE END USERS?

It accommodates several users. This app is available to everyone who is interested in learning, sharing, and gaining knowledge about sex education. This app's primary goal is to give parents, kids, and teens access to a platform that facilitates the exchange of accurate knowledge on sex-related topics. The application serves as a bridge that connects the two extremes rather than a medium. However, there is a substantial possibility that the parents will still refuse to engage in that circumstance. Therefore, it has been ensured that only relevant information is supplied to their children, allowing them to build an awareness.

Expert Feedback

NEXT STEP CONCLUSION

“Loved the concept of the app and much required in this world. It addresses a real social issue. In fact, I was working on a similair concept in the space. I - Usability is good. II - Design - Color selection more curious to know why this particular colour. III - There were blogs, videos, posts and a social media model. Ideally the app should start with one of that. Like animated videos or audio to educate and then slowly introduce the other features so that the learning curve is met. IV - UX flow and navigation is good. I did not face any problems in going to and fro. V - Minor issues like padding , element differentiation and all I could notice but considering this is a mock it should be fine. 6. I would probably not collect the user data and login in the beginning considering the nature of app and people may not be open to give their contact up free. So, creating a default user id and later signing them up to access some premium features would be a good idea.

PLAN

An educational app that is interactive as well and allows multiple users to Connect, Discover, Share, and Learn.

The content for the app will differ for different age groups. For instance, the user of the age group” 10 - 13” will be able to access the content the experts believe is necessary for them to know like - “changes during puberty”. This feature works on 2 principles “What is the right age “ and “How much should children know”.

There will be experts who will be associated with this app. They will be the ones who will be answering the more technical questions of the users. They would also be giving input, advice, suggestions, tips , etc. to users from their end (in the form of an article or a clip) that will be projected on the discovery panel of the user, from time to time.

TABS

DISCOVER TAB - Automatically fills the feed of the user with video clips and blogs related to the content they are searching for (age specific).

WATCH TAB - It consists of a series of educational animated videos (taken from existing sources) that fully explain the different areas of sexEd. for ex: “Where do babies come from”.

READ TAB - All the topics we cover through the video series will have a simultaneous blog for those users who prefer reading. It also includes blogs/ articles written by experts and users who want to share a piece of info. to the other users.

TALK TAB - Here the user will be able to set permission as to who can see whatever they are writing or asking. it could be to a specific individual, a group, experts, or maybe everyone. Here one can write their questions and if one knows the answers to someone else’s question you can do that too.(online chat area like Quora).
